Dear Murphy Ranch Families:

First and foremost, we hope this letter finds you all safe and healthy. These are unprecedented times. And with the ongoing spread of COVID-19 and the incredible speed at which things are changing around us, we are all continually adapting our lives and how we interact with the community around us.

Our dedicated Murphy Ranch Little League Board of Directors has been monitoring the outbreak closely, staying up to date with all Little League International, CDC and local public health official recommendations to keep our community safe. We have been holding on to as much hope as possible that the circumstances we are all going through will allow us to get back to our normal daily lives and eventually resume playing the game of baseball.

Unfortunately, we have come to a point where tough decisions regarding the remainder of our season must be made. So it is with a very heavy heart, that on behalf of the Murphy Ranch Little League Board of Directors, I must inform you that we are cancelling the remainder of our 2020 Spring baseball season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The safety and well-being of all our families is always our highest priority.

Murphy Ranch Little League Board of Directors had been working with the City of Whittier and Little League International to develop various scenarios for continuing our season, but unfortunately there were circumstances that were beyond our control that have prohibited us from continuing our season, as we had once hoped. Our turning point came after the East Whittier City School District, out of an abundance of caution and safety, informed us that they have closed their campuses to all youth sports for the summer and until their schools reopen for the next school year. And with this closure, the City of Whittier has closed all their parks and facilities and has respectfully asked all youth sports organizations within our city to cancel the remainder of their season. And now, the County of Los Angeles has extended the Stay-at-Home order. So as a Board we had to come to terms with the reality that resuming our season is no longer an option.

We realize that our families have made a significant investment to play baseball. Our Board has been preparing for the closure of the season for a couple of weeks now and we have been working hard to come up with 3 different options to compensate families due to the forfeit of our season. But first, please recognize in advance that many of the operational expenses that it takes to run a little league and start a new baseball season, such as uniforms, equipment, player pictures, field supplies, field maintenance, Little League chartering fees, insurance fees, and many other expenses, were already paid for out of registration fees that were collected.

As a board we have the obligation to operate the league in a manner that is fiscally responsible to ensure that families have a place to play baseball well into the future. In addition to weighing the issues associated with keeping players and parents healthy, our Board has had to grapple with the economic impacts of this crisis. Our league’s finances rely on revenues (snack shacks, spirit wear, etc.) and fundraisers generated during our season to sustain our operations and maintain the fields at Murphy Ranch. Without those revenues, there is simply no way to achieve a break-even budget this year. In short, like most organizations, MRLL has been hit hard by COVID-19.

At this time, we can offer 3 options with regard to the 2020 registration fees that were paid:
• Option 1: Donate your registration fees to the League. Donations received will be utilized to ensure that MRLL is able to sustain operations, maintain the fields at MR, and provide the ability to quickly launch baseball activities when we are approved to do so.
• Option 2: Request a $50 credit towards your child(ren)’s registration fee for the Spring 2021 Season.
• Option 3: Request a $40 refund (up to 2 players) and $25 for each additional child (3rd, 4th, or 5th player) you have registered. *All League start-up expenses mentioned above and Community Discount Cards, have been accounted for to come up with this amount.

Please use the following link to let us know which option you would like to pursue: We kindly request that you complete the survey by May 30, 2020. Please note that any non-action by this date will result in a donation to the League.

Team photos and snack shack deposit checks will also be made available in the coming weeks. Details will be discussed with managers and team parents and directly. We will distribute pictures and Snack shack deposit checks following the CDC guidelines to do our best to ensure everyone’s safety. We appreciate your continued patience.

We will miss our players and their families. We will miss seeing our players grow as they practice as a team, play games, and build friendships with their teammates. But we must also keep the health and safety of our players, managers, coaches, and families as our top priority. But please remember… as a league we are resilient, we are dedicated, and Murphy Ranch Little League will emerge stronger and more united than ever to serve our youth in the City of Whittier!

As stay at home orders continue to gradually lift, and businesses and other public spaces continue with their phased openings, this certainly provides great hope that we can resume baseball activities at some point relatively soon. For our part, we have begun planning various options for a fall season as well as other baseball activities that we may be able to implement as a bridge before that. Please stay tuned for updates!
Thank you,
